About this Piece
A traditional ole time carnival character, the Burrokeet was brought to Trinidad by Venezuelan settlers dating back to the 18th century when Trinidad was still a Spanish colony. It depicts a masquerader mimicking prancing on a costume resembling a donkey. The character embodies the cultural fusion of the Venezuelan, East Indian and African influences in carnival. The artist was able to capture the vibrant spirit of this character with its bright, colourful costume, and its movement as seen in the swirl of the skirt thus evoking the joy of carnival and the cultural legacy of its history.
