About this Piece

Inspired by the 1990 song RAMAJAY by GB & Anise Hadeed. The lyrics “LIKE A HUMMINGBIRD IN
SUSPENSION! RAMAJAY !” “PAN LIKE AN ARTIST’S BRUSH…”
This painting depicts the steelpan as music brought to life through the image of a hummingbird in flight—
constantly moving, changing, and captivating the senses with its beauty and grace. The hummingbird’s
fluid movement reflects the energy, freedom, and excitement of steelpan music. The highly reflective
surface of the steelpan captures and mirrors the vibrant colours of the bird, creating a visual connection
between the instrument and the music it produces.
It’s showtime! The glowing bokeh evokes the vibrant lights of a live performance, capturing the energy and
excitement of the stage. Framing the composition, the musical sheets represent the rich legacy of pan—
the countless melodies it has carried, the musical traditions it has shaped, and its remarkable journey
from the yard to the stage!
