Sonia Alexis

I enjoy painting interesting faces and old buildings, some of which are no longer around. I study the character of my subjects and this allows me to get an intimate understanding as I bring my subjects to life. I am self-taught and enjoy the versatility of acrylics. I have been a member of Women in Art for the past twenty-two years and have participated in their annual exhibitions. I am also a member of the National Art Registry.

Hilaria

This once beautiful landmark called Hilaria which means "cheerful" was situated at the corner of Carlos
Street and Ariapita Avenue south, Woodbrook, and was built circa 1930. This stately house rich with
architectural heritage had an "L" shaped porch. The corner of the "L" was covered by an open turret
decorated with fretwork which extended to the front of the roof. The artist was able to capture its details
together with the beautiful well maintained garden. Sadly the house was demolished in 2018.

Enjoying a Smoke

Dressed in her Sunday best, Granny sits down to enjoy a smoke. Pipe smoking is the oldest form of
smoking. It has been a form of relaxation and enjoyment. The artist was able to capture the details of the
slow pull of the tobacco both in Granny's lips and cheeks and the look of enjoyment in her eyes.

Myler House

Myler House, built circa 1906, is a National Heritage site located at 88 Belmont Circular Road, Belmont.
The artist was able to capture in detail this gingerbread type house built with steep gables edged with
elaborate fretwork which crowns this beauty. Its outstanding colour scheme adds character and whimsy
and highlights the intricate details of its facade. Its fence is embellished with details that draw the eye to
this architectural work of art.
