Leona Fabien

My journey with Women in Art of Trinidad and Tobago began in 2001, and I've been fortunate to receive recognition for my work, including an Award of Merit at the 2021 "Radiance" exhibition.

My artistic inspiration stems from the everyday beauty and decay that surrounds us. The architectural tapestry of Port of Spain, a blend of tradition and modernity, has deeply influenced my work. The dilapidated grandeur of these structures, often overlooked, adds a unique character to my paintings. These spaces reflect our cosmopolitan society, carefree spirit, and innovative approach to construction.

Beyond painting, I also create wearable art pieces on silk fabric, exploring the intersection of art and fashion.

Uprooted

This painting looks at the destruction of heritage buildings, and residences as a result of increasing commercialisation of an existing community in Trinidad. Featured are bulldozers, parts of a house, broken fences representing the broken community. References in the form of newspaper articles are included in the background to highlight if heritage buildings mean anything to us as well as in another article: the government's desire to expand commercially. The painting highlights the experiences of some residents
