Holi – The Festival of Colours
About the Piece
Holi, in the Hindu traditions and customs, celebrate rebirth, renewal, reconciliation, the blossoming of love
and the arrival of spring with the throwing of colours. This Festival of Colours or Phagwa as fondly known
by Indo-Trinbagonians is connected with the legend of the demon King Hiranyakashyap and his son
Prahlad and sister Holika. The colours used during Holi has significant meanings: red symbolizes love and
fertility, yellow is the colour of turmeric, a powder and natural remedy native to India, blue signifies the
Hindu God Krishna, and green is for new beginnings.
